After getting its official name in 1964 as it was earlier known as Chanda, Chandrapur is a city and a municipal corporation located in the Chandrapur district of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is also known as a fort city that was initially built by a Gond king from the 13th century, popularly known as Khandkya Ballal Sah. The area around this city is believed to be rich in coal seams, which also makes Chandrapur popular as a 'black gold city'. Chandrapur is located in the eastern region of the Maharashtra state and the central region of India. The black gold city lies at the confluence of the Zarpat and Erai rivers.
